Playstation 3 just got a new update to version 3.21. This has
been a buzz in web because Sony's announce that they will remove
ability to run Linux in PS3. So let's see how it goes, as I'm
updating it at the moment. I have 80GB Sony Playstation 3
version (not the slim one but the shiny one). And yes, there's
Linus distro, Yellow Dog installed, and of course some game
data. Backing-up data didn't cross my mind because there's
simply so little of it so it's good to test what happen to all
my data after update is done. Waiting some minutes to see it
after update is done.
Okay, now I got prompt warning that if you have Other OS installed, you
should back-up all important data, and fact that Other OS is no longer available
after this update is done. Scary was that PS3 warns that even the whole
partition is not available after update, if Other OS is not removed beforehand
manually. Which means formatting from system menu. I'm lazy so I didn't do it.
Let's see what happens to my dear PS3 after it get those new 3.21 update peaces
into place.
Didn't take too long for the PS3 to update itself. Let's look
around. Hmm. background and Settings are just I let them before update.
Mediaservers are there too, but it can look-up these automatically anyway. Also
the game saved data is in place. Actually only thing I notice missing is the
whole Yellow Dog and all data that was in that partition. Maybe Sony mean this
by losing partition. I'm not sure did the space on old Other OS partition come
to use of PS3. Should be taken some numbers up and see what happened it, but now
it's too late. Anyway, full format later will do the trick if space is missing.
As conclusion; If you have Linux laying just for nothing at
Other OS partition and there's no important data such as, music,
videos etc. I wouldn't go thru the whole backup thing. Actually
this was easy way for me to get rid off YDL since I have no use
for that. But if you have data in that Other Os partition - be
sure to make backup before 3.21 update of PS3, and if you're
even a bit unsure - do it in anycase.
